In Year 3, pupils begin their Spanish journey through lively, practical topics including greetings, the body, food, family, school and dates.

They develop confidence in listening and speaking, learn key Spanish sounds and begin to read and write familiar words and short phrases.

Lessons encourage curiosity about Spanish and the wider Spanish-speaking world.

In Year 4, pupils build on their early Spanish through topics including towns, travel, shopping, the wider world, daily routines and free time.

They develop a wider vocabulary, take part in simple conversations and begin to combine familiar language into longer sentences while continuing to strengthen pronunciation, listening, reading and writing.

In Year 5, pupils communicate in greater detail through topics including personal information, appearance, eating out, their world, classroom language and the past.

They develop grammatical awareness, extend opinions and descriptions and increasingly adapt familiar vocabulary and structures to create their own spoken and written responses.

In Year 6, pupils develop greater independence through topics including Spanish towns, shopping, Spain, time, the environment and future adventures.

They apply language in practical situations, read and listen for increasing detail and produce more sustained spoken and written responses.

The year consolidates KS2 learning and prepares pupils confidently for language learning at secondary school.

In Year 7, pupils develop the foundations of Spanish through topics including personal information, free time, school, family and friends and the local area.

They learn to introduce themselves, describe people and places, express opinions and talk about their interests and everyday lives.

Pupils develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing while building key vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar and exploring aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.

In Year 8, pupils build on their existing Spanish through topics including holidays, leisure and technology, food and eating out, making plans and summer activities.

They communicate in a wider range of situations, express more detailed opinions and increasingly work across present, past and future time frames.

Listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation are developed alongside further exploration of Spanish-speaking cultures.

In Year 9, pupils develop greater independence and confidence through topics including personal interests, future plans and careers, healthy lifestyles, young people and global issues and travel in Spain.

They draw together language learned throughout Key Stage 3, producing longer and more detailed Spanish across different time frames and developing the listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation skills that provide a strong foundation for further study.

Listening – 35 mins (Foundation) and 45 minutes (Higher)

Speaking – 15 minutes preparation and 7-9 minutes speaking (Foundation) and 10-12 minutes speaking (Higher)

Reading – 45 minutes (Foundation) and 1 hour (Higher)

Writing – 1 hour 10 minutes (Foundation) and 1 hour 15 minutes (Higher)

All four papers carry an equal 25% weighting of the overall grad
